Heraklion is the airport to fly into: 60 km and about an hour east on the national road (VOAK), past Hersonissos and Malia, then through the hills past Neapoli and down to the bay. Chania Airport is more than three and a half hours away.

Agios Nikolaos is the base for eastern Crete. Elounda and the boats to Spinalonga are a quarter of an hour away, the Byzantine frescoes of Panagia Kera at Kritsa as close, and Ierapetra on the south coast only half an hour β Crete is at its narrowest here. Knossos and Heraklion are an hour back west, and the palm beach at Vai makes a long day east. Crete by car: all the day trips and driving times.
The town climbs steeply around its small lake and the harbour, and the streets in the centre are narrow, with one-way systems. Park at the edge of the centre and walk the rest β it is a small town. The coast roads north to Elounda and south-east towards Ierapetra are easy driving.

Yes, if you want more than the town beach. Spinalonga, Kritsa, Voulisma, Ierapetra and Vai are all easy by car, and having the car from the airport also saves booking a transfer each way.
Yes β that is how most guests do it: drive back to Heraklion Airport, leave the car with us at the terminal and fly. Allow about an hour for the drive, more in summer traffic.
