NEW HERAKLION AIRPORT · KASTELLI

Car rental at the new Heraklion Airport (Kastelli)

Crete's new international airport is being built at Kastelli, about 25 km inland from Heraklion. It will replace the Nikos Kazantzakis airport we deliver to today. When it opens, we will bring your car to it free of charge — exactly as we do now.

What is actually being built

When it opens — the honest answer

November 2028 is the date the project is working to. Treat any date with some caution: this airport has been announced for 2025, then 2026, then 2027, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport confirmed 2028 in January 2026, when construction stood at about 67%. We will update this page as the date firms up rather than leave an old promise sitting here.

What it changes for your rental — nothing

Delivery to the new airport will be free, the same as it is at the airport today. You will find your car waiting, we will still track your flight and wait for a late arrival, and there will still be no deposit and no credit card. The address changes; the way we work does not.

Renting before then

Until the new airport opens, everything happens at Heraklion Airport (HER) as it does today — free delivery to the terminal, at any hour. We also meet the ferries at Heraklion Port and deliver to hotels across the island.

Frequently asked questions

When does the new Heraklion airport at Kastelli open?

November 2028 is the current target. The date has moved several times — 2025, 2026 and 2027 were all announced before it — and in January 2026 the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport confirmed 2028, with construction at roughly 67%.

Will the old Heraklion airport close?

Yes. The new airport is a replacement, not a second airport. Nikos Kazantzakis (HER) is expected to stop handling passenger flights once Kastelli takes over.

How far is Kastelli airport from Heraklion?

About 25 km. It lies between Kastelli Pediada and Arkalochori, inland and south-east of the city, and the journey is expected to take under half an hour on the northern road axis.

Will you deliver a rental car to the new airport?

Yes, and free of charge — the same as we do at the current Heraklion airport. Delivery to the terminal is included in the price, with no deposit and no credit card required.

Does the new airport have an IATA code yet?

Not a published one. Until it is announced, flights and bookings continue to use HER for Heraklion. If the code changes, nothing about your booking with us changes — we deliver to the airport your flight lands at.

Flying into Crete after 2028? Book the same way you would today. If your arrival airport changes between now and then, we move the delivery with it and tell you — you do not have to work it out.
