The highest-riding car in the fleet and the most powerful automatic — a 1.3-litre turbo with 115 hp. The height is not a styling detail on Crete: the tracks down to Agiofarago, to the quieter beaches east of Sissi, and to half the tavernas worth eating at are unmade, rutted, and hard on a low car's underside. This one simply drives down them. The rear bench slides, so you can trade legroom for boot space depending on whether the back is carrying people or a fortnight's luggage, and with it forward the boot swallows more than anything else we rent. The automatic gearbox is the one to have if your itinerary includes the road to Chania — close to two hours of continuous bends in each direction, and a clutch you will stop enjoying by the second hour. It is the widest car here, so the old streets of Rethymno and the village lanes above Agios Nikolaos need more care than they would in a Corsa. For a family with a full boot and a plan to see the whole island, it is the right tool.
The extra ground clearance is not a luxury on this island. The last 8 km to Balos are an unpaved mountain track, plenty of the best south-coast beaches sit at the end of a dirt road, and mountain villages are reached on surfaces that are patched rather than resurfaced. An SUV also sits you higher, which makes the coastal hairpins a great deal less nerve-racking for a driver who is not used to them.
It is an automatic, which on Crete matters more than people expect. The coastal roads are a near-constant sequence of hairpins and the climbs inland are steep and long — not having to work a clutch through any of that leaves you free to look at the view.
