The most powerful car in our fleet by a distance — a 1.5-litre turbo with 150 hp — and it costs the same as the small hatchbacks because it is a manual. If you enjoy driving, this is the booking to make. Crete rewards it: the climb from Agios Nikolaos towards the Katharo Plateau, the road over the shoulder of Psiloritis, the long open sweeps on the way to Sitia are all better with an engine that pulls from low revs and a chassis set up firmer than standard. The FR trim means sports seats and a stiffer setup, so it is more taut over rough surfaces than the Captur — that is the trade. It is an SUV body, so ground clearance and boot space come with it: two large cases and the shopping, and unmade tracks to the beaches are not a problem. The one thing to be sure about is the gearbox. If anyone driving would rather not work a clutch through two hours of hairpins to Chania, take the automatic version instead.
The extra ground clearance is not a luxury on this island. The last 8 km to Balos are an unpaved mountain track, plenty of the best south-coast beaches sit at the end of a dirt road, and mountain villages are reached on surfaces that are patched rather than resurfaced. An SUV also sits you higher, which makes the coastal hairpins a great deal less nerve-racking for a driver who is not used to them.
It has a manual gearbox, which keeps the daily rate down and gives you more control on the long descents — useful on the mountain roads, where engine braking saves your brakes on the way back down from Omalos or Anogia.
