The CretAquarium at Gournes is five minutes away and is the one indoor thing on this coast worth a rainy morning. Beyond that, Heraklion and Knossos are twenty minutes west, and the whole eastern coast opens up from your door.

Neither. We take no deposit and we do not need a credit card — you pay when we hand you the keys in Gouves, in cash or by card. It is the main reason people book with us instead of at an airport desk.
You can, and it costs nothing: delivery to Heraklion Airport is free. It is worth it if you land early and want the car straight away. If you are arriving tired with luggage and children, the €20 to have it waiting at your hotel in Gouves is usually the better twenty euros you will spend.
Gouves lies about twenty minutes east of Heraklion Airport, which makes it the shortest hop of any resort on this coast. Hersonissos is ten minutes further east, Heraklion and Knossos twenty minutes west, and the turning for the Lasithi Plateau is just past the village.
Kato Gouves is the beach side: a long strip of sand and pebbles with the hotels along it, quieter than Hersonissos and closer to the airport. Ano Gouves, the old village, is a few minutes up the hill, with its square and tavernas. Inland, the Skotino cave — one of the largest in Crete — is about twenty minutes away, and just past the village the road turns off for the Lasithi Plateau. Parking is easy almost everywhere here: the big beachfront resorts have their own, and the village has spaces around the square.
