The 208 puts a small steering wheel low in front of you and the instruments above it, which either suits you immediately or takes an afternoon — worth knowing before you commit to a fortnight. What you get for that is a car that feels more expensive than it costs: firmer, more planted through the long bends on the coast road, better damped over the patched tarmac any Greek island has plenty of. A 1.0-litre with 90 hp and a manual gearbox, so the same honest performance as the Corsa; the difference is in how it rides and how the cabin is finished, not in what it will do up a hill. Two people and their luggage are comfortable; the rear seats are usable for a short hop rather than a day in the mountains. Choosing between this and the Corsa at the same money: take the 208 if you like driving, the Corsa if you would rather have the simpler dashboard.
A small hatchback is the easiest car to live with in Crete. The old quarters of Chania and Rethymno are a grid of lanes barely wider than a car, village streets in the mountains were laid out for donkeys, and parking in Heraklion is genuinely tight — all of which a compact car shrugs off. It is also the cheapest to run on the long west-coast drives, where you will cover 300 km in a day without noticing.
It has a manual gearbox, which keeps the daily rate down and gives you more control on the long descents — useful on the mountain roads, where engine braking saves your brakes on the way back down from Omalos or Anogia.
