A small car with a slightly bigger engine than its size suggests, and an automatic gearbox — on Crete that combination earns its keep. The 2021 Picanto we rent has a 1.2-litre petrol engine: it parks like a city car in Heraklion and Rethymno, but the extra 200 cc over a 1.0 shows on the climbs — the road up to Zaros, the switchbacks towards Lasithi — where a smaller engine would keep the automatic hunting between gears. Four doors make the back seats usable for real passengers rather than coats, and two people with two medium cases travel comfortably. It is the car we suggest when someone wants the smallest class, an automatic, and no feeling of being underpowered on the first mountain road. If you are two adults touring the island rather than a family staying at one beach, this is usually enough car.

A small hatchback is the easiest car to live with in Crete. The old quarters of Chania and Rethymno are a grid of lanes barely wider than a car, village streets in the mountains were laid out for donkeys, and parking in Heraklion is genuinely tight — all of which a compact car shrugs off. It is also the cheapest to run on the long west-coast drives, where you will cover 300 km in a day without noticing.

It is an automatic, which on Crete matters more than people expect. The coastal roads are a near-constant sequence of hairpins and the climbs inland are steep and long — not having to work a clutch through any of that leaves you free to look at the view.

Where to drive it in Crete

Balos is 2h 50 west, Elafonisi 2h 45, Knossos barely 15 minutes from the airport, and Matala just over an hour to the south. Our Crete guide has driving times, parking and road conditions for every one of them — written for people arriving with a rental car, not a tour bus.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rent a Kia Picanto in Crete?

From 40€ a day, insurance and unlimited kilometres included. The price changes with the season and with how long you keep it — the booking form shows the exact figure before you enter any details, and there is no deposit and no credit card at any point.

Is the Kia Picanto automatic or manual?

This one is automatic. On Crete that matters more than people expect: the coastal roads are a near-constant sequence of hairpins and the climbs inland are steep and long.

Can I pick the Kia Picanto up at Heraklion Airport?

Yes, and delivery there is free — we meet you at arrivals with the keys. Heraklion Port is free as well, and we deliver to hotels in Hersonissos, Malia, Stalida, Gouves and Agia Pelagia for a fee shown in the form.

Can I rent a Kia Picanto for a whole month?

Yes. Monthly rentals are priced per month rather than per day and include everything — insurance, unlimited kilometres, a second driver, delivery and collection. See the monthly page for what each month costs.
